The kook manifesto

"Kook" is what surfers call a clueless beginner. We heard it as a compliment. These are our sacred laws, carved into a boogie board.

  1. We paddle for every wave.Including the ones that already broke. Including the ones at the next beach.
  2. The leash goes on whichever foot is closest. Both feet if you're feeling ambitious.
  3. Wax goes on the bottom. For speed. Probably. Nobody has checked.
  4. If you stood up for one second, it was a barrel. We don't make the rules. (We do make the rules.)
  5. The tide chart is a vibe chart.High tide, low tide, mid tide, all tide. Show up. Get wet.
  6. Sunscreen is face paint.Apply in stripes. Apply to the board. Apply to your friends (ask first).
  7. If a pro yells at you, wave back.Enthusiastically. Keep waving. Do not stop waving.
  8. The ocean is not trying to hurt us. It is flirting.

The benefits of
being a kook

The pros have sponsors and pressure. Kooks have snacks and absolutely no pressure.

PROVEN*

Every wave is a personal best

When the bar is "stood up for a second," you break a world record most Tuesdays. *Your own world. Still counts.

DOCTORS HATE THIS

Wipeouts are free comedy

A pro's fall is a bad day. A kook's fall is the season finale. Your friends will quote it at your wedding.

FASHION ICON

Zero image to protect

Floaties. Snorkel. Neon zinc. A board the size of a garage door. You were never going to look cool, so you get to look incredible.

TRUE

Flat days are still great days

No waves? Beach nap. Small waves? Beach nap with ambition. Big waves? Watch from the beach nap.

MATH

Improvement is mathematically guaranteed

You started at the bottom. There's nowhere to go but up. Or sideways. Or briefly underwater. Then up.

VIBES: MAX

All stoke, zero ego

The kook zone is the only part of the lineup where everyone cheers for everyone. It's basically a wet hug.

Better together. Louder together.

Kooks of a feather
paddle together

One kook is a beginner. Two kooks is a buddy system. Five kooks is a parade. Here's how the parade works.

  1. Party waves are mandatoryIf you can see the wave, you're on the wave. Collisions are just group hugs with momentum.
  2. Wipeout of the day gets crownedThe crown is a pool noodle tied in a circle. It is the highest honor we have.
  3. Snacks are communalSo is the sunscreen. So is the one dry towel. Especially the one dry towel.
  4. If you see a kook struggling, cheer louderThen actually help them. Then cheer again.
  5. No gatekeeping, everNew kooks get a wave, a tip, a high five and a nickname they didn't choose.
  6. The sunset debrief is sacredEvery wave gets retold, and every retelling it grows a foot. By dark, we all surfed Jaws.

Check everything that has ever happened to you. Kooks don't lie. Kooks exaggerate, which is different.

Kook FAQ

Can I be a kook if I've never surfed?
You are the purest kook of all. You have unlimited potential and zero bad habits. Mostly zero.
Is kook.life sponsored by a surf brand?
No. We've sent several letters. One was returned with sand in it, which we're choosing to read as a yes.
When do I stop being a kook?
You don't. You just become a kook with better excuses.
Is this safe?
Define "safe." (Real answer: take a lesson, surf near lifeguards, stay out of the experts' way, and respect the locals. Kooks are chaotic, not reckless.)
